The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA)
Giving Hope … Making Miracles
If you could help make a miracle, would you?
The question is as simple as that. If your answer is ‘yes', then please join the nearly 150,000 volunteers and contributors who during the past 25 years have generously donated their time and money to the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA). These volunteers and financial supporters are COTA's Miracle Makers -- a group of committed individuals who are helping give children across the country a second chance at life.
COTA is a national non-profit organization that helps children and young adults who need or have had a life-saving transplant by raising funds to pay transplant-related expenses. Transplant families look to COTA for assistance and support, for hope and miracles.
Twenty-five years ago, COTA’s first family began their transplant journey in Bloomington, Indiana, and wrote the first chapter in COTA’s story of hope. These two young parents learned their son had biliary atresia and needed a liver transplant to survive. Adding to this time of turmoil was the fact that they faced exclusion from the organ waiting list because they could not pay for such a costly surgery even though they had insurance coverage. When their family, friends and community members learned of their dire situation, hundreds responded immediately and enthusiastically. School children gave their allowances and went door-to-door collecting loose change. Neighbors donated cash, brought in meals and provided support and comfort. Friends took coin canisters to the local county fair and asked for donations. Local political leaders interceded with insurance companies on their behalf. Within weeks, the community raised more than $100,000, enabling the child to be placed on the liver transplant waiting list.
Tragically, this toddler died before a liver became available. But his death was not the end of the story because it inspired a determination to help other families who faced similar transplant-related challenges. This young couple, and COTA’s original Miracle Makers, had the vision to found the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. Since 1986, COTA has helped thousands of patients raise millions of dollars for transplant-related expenses. COTA is a 501(c)3 organization; therefore donations to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. COTA is the premier national organization helping families with transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of all funds raised are used for transplant-related expenses. COTA does not charge a fee or take a percentage of the funds raised.
